I read this in high school and it blew my mind. Before reading GEB, I did not take seriously just how weird consciousness is. Nor did I think deeply about what it might mean for an artificial system to be conscious. Now, years later, I am even more confused about what consciousness is or what AI is, but I am grateful to this book for sparking a curiosity about those topics that has lasted to this day. Reading GEB was akin to a spiritual experience—Hofstadter weaves together math, art, and language in a manner that can only be described as beautiful and transcendent. Like many others, I can directly trace my interest (and career) in AI back to this book. Hofstadter’s predictions did not age well, given LLMs, but that’s almost besides the point. This book will always be worth reading.
